Use Skill Acquisition to Augment NYSC Allowance ~ State Coordinator.
The Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme has been described as one of the best things to have happened in the NYSC Scheme, through which wealth creators have been produced.
This was made known by the state coordinator Mr David Pwanidi Markson at the opening ceremony of the 2019 Batch ‘B’Stream 1 on-camp Skill Acquisition Training, he said “The introduction of the SAED Programme into the Orientation course content has helped a lot of Corps members to learn various skills to augment the allowance paid by the Federal Government and also be employers of labour. ” Most of the facilitators we have here on camp were Ex- Corps members who served in the State and are now established business men and women. “You must take this programme seriously for your own good. Come up with ideas ,great ideas that would make you self-reliant . “It is no news that the era of white collar jobs is gone ” he maintained.
The skills to be taught during the ten day on -camp training include: Construction, Beautification, Culture and tourism, food processing and preservation, cosmetology, Photography, Agro-allied, Information and Communication Technology, Education, Power and energy, Automobile and environment. Corps members would be exposed to the twelve set skills with sub-sets in the course of the training and are expected to continue with the post-Camp training after the Orientation course.
The mandate of the Skill Acquisition Programme is to contribute meaningfully to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) by reducing extreme poverty and hunger ,among others.
“Considering the increasing rate of unemployment among Nigerian graduates , the Skill Acquisition Programme was also introduced into the Scheme because most graduates do not to possess the practical skills necessary for the available jobs in the Nigerian Economy.
The Skill Acquisition Programme is therefore building the capacity of Corps members to gain the required entrepreneurship and hands-on Skills to cope with the challenges of unemployment in the global economic down turn” he said
The Assistant Director,Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme, NYSC Gombe Mr Ukwenya Owoicho, informed the Corps members on the exhibition and inter-platoon competition coming at the end of the ten day training. He said “It is high time Nigerian Youths took skill Acquisition Programme seriously as a plan B for self-reliance”.
