Chima Azubuike, Gombe state.
Engr. Abubakar Bappah, chairman of Gombe state water task force has stated the resolve of the state water board to attain a daily capacity of 50 Million litres of water in the state and to sustain the improved supply in the Gombe metropolis.
Bappah, stated this today at the flagoff of water reticulation and repair work on water pipelines for WuroJuli, Tabra, Nayinawa & Liji to GGSS Doma as well as Bogo & Fed. Lowcost Areas .
He said “You will recall that when we were commissioned by governor to seek for the possible means of providing water to the people of Gombe. “We identified amongst other problems militating against the supply.
“We discovered that some people connected pipes illegally thereby distorting water circulation, it also resulted to waste. “When we came onboard the total capacity of water was less than 10,000,000 but as we speak we pump 35,000,000 – 43,000,000 litres per day and our target is to attain 50,000,000 litres from water works. “Infact this place has the capacity to produce 13,000,000 but at the moment it is yet to commence operation but there are plans to also kickstart Water supply from Malam Inna which has a capacity of 17,000,000 litres” he added .
Governor Inuwa Yahaya, shortly before the flag off expressed dismay at the inability of the previous administration to tackle the water challenges experienced by the residents of the state he said “At the time I was commissioner of finance, we spent 10 Billion to bring water from Dadinkowa Dam to the metropolis. “It was designed in such a way that the pipe will pass through 15 settlements, villages and a local government headquarter. “Unfortunately care was not taken and it was an act of carelessness. People that were not meant to be served tapped from it thereby reducing the capacity by 70%. “Majority of our people will get pipe borne water” he stated.
It will be recalled that the Governor had recently released the sum of 110 million to the Gombe State Water Board for the said work, with a directive to the Taskforce on water supply.
