White wine remained the most popular of wines produced in Germany in 2023, followed by red and rosé, according to figures by the German Wine Institute (DWI).
As in the previous year, white wine accounted for two thirds of the total. The proportion of quality-attested red wines remained stable at a good fifth (21 per cent) and rosé remained unchanged at 13 per cent, according to DWI spokesman Ernst Büscher.
Just over half (51 per cent) of all German quality-tested wines on offer were dry, according to the May figures. This was one percentage point more than in 2022, but 8 percentage points more than 10 years ago (2013) and 15 percentage points more than 20 years ago (2003).
At 29 per cent, the proportion of sweet and semi-sweet wines last year was on a par with the previous year. One in five wines was classed as semi-dry, a proportion that has not changed since 2003.
A total of 7 million hectolitres of quality and Prädikat wines – the top two rankings – successfully passed the quality wine test.
According to the DWI, this corresponds to around 95 per cent of German wine production. One hectolitre is 100 litres.
