U.S. President Joe Biden has expressed support for Nigeria securing a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, stating that Africa should have two permanent seats on the council.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, revealed that Biden conveyed this stance during a 30-minute phone conversation with Tinubu on Tuesday evening.

Tuggar noted that the discussion took place shortly after the release of Binance’s head of financial crime compliance, Tigran Gambaryan, on October 23.’

According to Tuggar, Biden emphasized that he sees no reason why Nigeria should not hold a permanent position on the UN Security Council.

“The two leaders also discussed the issue of permanent seats, and the United Nations security council and President Biden once again assured that the United States is committed to seeing Africa having two permanent seats,” Tuggar added.

Recall, Africa has long advocated for equal representation on the UN Security Council.

According to the Daily Post, the UN General Assembly elects five new members annually from various global regions, each serving a two-year term on the council.

Currently, Africa holds three rotating seats on the 15-member council.
