Moral decadence amongst youth: Expert seeks concerted effort to address menace
An Abuja-based educationist, Mr Uwumarogie Emmanuel Osarumwense, has called for concerted effort towards addressing the gross reduction in moral values exhibited by youths across the country.
Osarumwense made the call in an interview with Periscope Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday.
He said the call had become imperative in view of the several “unbelievable characters being exhibited by youths who are the leaders of the future.”
The educationalist stated that in view of the high reduction in the value system in our society, human lives no longer matter as many go into rituals, drug abuse and crimes of unprecedented magnitude.”
According to him, the issue has made most youth and even students to show total deviation from the culture of dignity and respect that Africans and Nigerians in particular are known for.
He added that the level of ‘wickedness and crimes’ being exhibited has reached an unbearable level and “we must act now before we all get into irredeemable trouble.”
Governments at all levels, Civil Societies, religious bodies and all stakeholders must emphasize moral education for children and students while instilling the fear of God, he said, adding the leaders at all levels from parents, religious and political must present good exemplary lifestyles for youth to emulate.
While appealing to the youth and students to take their education seriously, Osarumwense said there was no gain in exhibiting attitudes that destroy society.
According to him, the reward for good conduct is a better society and future for Nigeria and its citizens.
