Gombe United Beat Wikki Tourist Fc In A Keenly Contested NorthEast NPFL Derby
Gombe United recorded a 2-1 victory over Wikki Tourist Fc of Bauchi in a keenly contested match day 35 fixture of the ongoing Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), at the Pantami stadium, Gombe.
Ibrahim Yahaya who wore the armband slotted home from close range off Ahmed Jimoh’s delicious pass from inside the box in the 34′ put the hosts in front.
It took just four minutes for the Kaura boys to level the scoreline via Victor Okoro’s long range effort.
It was all square in the first half at the Pantami stadium as all efforts put by the Savannah Scorpions to increase their tally proved abortive.
The introduction of Sani Suleiman and Mohammed Aminu in the 63′ made an immediate impact, as the latter took a sublime corner kick (his first touch the ball) which was headed home by Ahmed Jimoh in the 64′ .
Speaking during a post match reaction Coach Aliyu Zubairu of Gombe United expressed gratitude to God for the victory over his former club.
He said, ” It wasn’t an easy match, considering that fact it’s a derby involving two clubs from the north east; but all the same, the boys did well.”
According to him, any match of such magnitude always raised tension, but he was happy that his boys were not consumed by anxiety.
” After picking an away draw against Kano Pillars and drew at home with Shooting Stars , their target was to pick a point or win in Gombe,” Zubairu added.
Zubairu expressed optimism that the Savannah Scorpions would go for the maximum three points in their next match away against Abia Warriors next week.
On his part, Abdullahi Adamu of Wikki Tourist lauded the efforts of his boys.
Adamu said, “It was a good game, our boys played according to instructions, but the day is not our day.”
Abdullahi Adamu said they would ensure they won their remaining two home matches. ” We’re going to continue fighting for our points at home and away, till the end,” he added.
