The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade earlier scheduled to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence on Wednesday, October 1.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen.
According to the statement, the decision does not reduce the importance of the milestone anniversary.
“The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm,” Imohiosen said.
He explained that all other activities lined up for the Independence Anniversary would go ahead as planned.
“Accordingly, all other programmes slated for the Independence Anniversary will remain in effect,” he noted.
The government expressed regret over the inconvenience the development may cause members of the public, the diplomatic community, and invited guests.
“The Federal Government deeply regrets any inconvenience caused by this cancellation. We appreciate the understanding, support, and cooperation of all Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests,” the statement read.
Imohiosen added that the government was focused on implementing reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen the nation.
“We urge Nigerians to support the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in making Nigeria a greater nation,” he stated.
