TEACH YOUR CHILDREN HOW TO RESPOND TO FAILURE AND SUCCESS

Have I failed before? Yes I failed a thousand times.
Should I make failure a priority: No
Should I make effort to succeed: Yes
Have I succeeded before: yes.

While everyone is optimistic about life, there are dark days, I mean very dark days. Days when the unexpected happens, days when your best seems not to be good enough, days when your hope is dashed, Days when we lost loved ones, days when we have broken relationship, days when you just fail. At such times you are permitted to cry and lament, but you are not permitted to kill your self or give up on life.

While in 400L in the university I had a carry over in Land Law. Due to my status on campus the news of my failure was a resounding one.
After sobbing and sulking I had to confront my reality and I moved on. I wrote the carry over and I passed.

Did I die? No
Did I feel ashamed at first: Yes.

Sometimes we make our children believe they cannot fail putting them under so much pressure. Some Students of secondary schools and higher institutions have committed suicide due to the high expectations that was placed on them by their parents while others degenerated into mental health, all because of the fact that they failed one examination or the other.

While we encourage our children to excel in life, let’s remind them that in life you either get a NO or a YES as an answer even after putting in your best. When you get a NO, don’t KILL YOUR SELF!!!
Support your children irrespective of the out come of their performance, especially children who gave in their best and still performed below their expectations.

When our children succeed, while we applaud their efforts, let’s also remind them that so many people have excelled before them so as to strike a balance.

Society have made us believe that it is impossible for adults to fail, no wonder our parents kept telling us they took first position in their classes while they were Children.

In conclusion, while I will advise that you should never make failure a priority, for a good start over again we can envisage it as an option.
