Lagelu youths fault renaming of road after Gov Nyesom Wike
The Lagelu Youth Consultative Forum, a socio-political youth organisation in Lagelu Local Government Area, has expressed its strong opposition to the renaming of the Ojurin/Odogbo Barracks/Olorunda Abaa Road in the state to “Governor Nyesom Wike Road.”
The organisation says its considers the decision by Governor Seyi Makinde, as political, biased, and selfish.
Governor Seyi Makinde recently flagged off the dualisation project of the 8.3km Akobo, Ojurin/Odogbo Barracks/Olorunda Abaa Junction road in Ibadan. The road, estimated at a cost of N9.6 billion, is set to be funded by Lagelu Local Government and completed within 12 months. However, it is the naming of the road that has sparked controversy.
Mr. Wole Adedoyin, Chairman of the Lagelu Youth Consultative Forum, expressed his disagreement with the governor’s decision, stating that Governor Nyesom Wike, does not deserve such an honour. Adedoyin argues that Wike has not made any significant contributions to the local government. Instead, he suggests that the road should be named after the late N.O Idowu, who played a pivotal role in its development.
Late N.O Idowu, a philanthropist, single-handedly tarred the road from Ojurin/Odogbo Barracks to Olorunda Abaa. His contributions extended beyond the road, including the establishment of a healthcare centre and a secondary school in the area.
Adedoyin emphasised that N.O Idowu deserves the recognition, given the direct impact on the community’s development.
Adedoyin said, “The Lagelu Youth Consultative Forum respectfully urges Governor Seyi Makinde to reconsider the decision to rename the road and give honour where it is truly due. The late Chief N.O. Idowu, with his remarkable contributions, deserves this recognition, not Governor Nyesom Wike, who lacks any connection or roots within the local government area.
“In light of this, the organisation intends to write a personal letter to Governor Makinde, appealing for the reversal of the road’s renaming. Should the governor refuse to address their concerns, the Lagelu Youth Consultative Forum is prepared to take peaceful protest actions to amplify their message and seek redress.
“The Lagelu Youth Consultative Forum remains committed to advocating for the welfare and interests of the Lagelu Local Government area and its youth. They firmly believe that honoring those who have made tangible contributions to the community will inspire future generations to actively participate in its development.”
