The Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, has commended the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the German Government, and the European Union for their continued efforts in strengthening democratic governance and legislative capacity in Borno State.
Rt. Hon. Lawan made the commendation in Abuja during the opening ceremony of a three-day Legislative Policy Dialogue Workshop on the Borno State Social Protection Policy and the Citizens’ Engagement and Participatory Planning Policy.
The policy dialogue is organized under the Supporting Sustainable Social Protection, Participation and Economic Resilience in Northeast Nigeria (SEPIN SUSI) Programme, which is co-funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union, and implemented by GIZ.
Speaking at the event, the Speaker expressed deep appreciation for the partnership and technical support that GIZ has consistently provided to the Borno State House of Assembly through a series of capacity-building programmes, policy dialogues, and technical workshops.
He noted that these engagements have enhanced the Assembly’s role in advancing inclusive policy formulation and evidence-based legislation, particularly in the areas of social protection and citizen participation.
In his words, “On behalf of the Borno State House of Assembly, I extend our profound gratitude to GIZ for their partnership, vision, and steadfast support.
“We look forward to sustaining this collaboration as we continue to improve the lives of our citizens through effective legislation and sound public policy,” he added.
The opening session was attended by all Honourable Members of the Borno State House of Assembly, the Chairman of the House of Assembly Service Commission, Hon. Ali Bulama Yajiwa; the Special Adviser to the Governor on Legislative Matters, Hon. Shettima Bukar Kullima; the Clerk of the House; Deputy Clerk; Directors of Legal Services and Planning; the Technical Assistant on Legislative Matters; and the Speaker’s Personal Assistant.
The three-day policy dialogue, which runs until November 5, 2025, brings together legislators, policymakers, and development partners to explore how social protection and citizen engagement policies can contribute to inclusive governance, resilience, and improved service delivery in Borno State.
