Nigeria’s sovereignty under attack: A rebuttal to Trump’s potential meddling, by Comrade Abdulazeez Sani

The recent suggestion of a confrontation between President Trump and President Tinubu/Nigeria is a clear case of external interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs. Nigeria’s government has demonstrated its commitment to democracy, stability, and the rule of law. The handling of Nnamdi Kanu’s case is a matter of national security and judicial process, not a subject for international intervention.

Trump, Tinubu and Sani

A New Era of Economic Independence

President Tinubu’s policies aimed at promoting economic independence have started yielding positive results, with the Naira appreciating to N1,421.73 against the dollar, a 1.07% increase, thanks to improved foreign reserves, rising oil revenues, and increased diaspora remittances. Nigeria’s trade surplus has also increased to ₦7.46 trillion ($4.74 billion) in 2nd quarter 2025, the largest in about three years.

Trump’s Threats: A Threat to Nigeria’s Sovereignty

However, Trump’s threats poses a great challenge to the roll out Nigeria’s economic policies and by extension it’s sovereignty. Nigeria has responded firmly, in a more deplomatic approach that it would embrace the US stand in fighting Islamist insurgents so long as its territorial integrity is respected. Trump’s comments have been perceived as dismissive and hostile towards the African continent, with potential consequences for Nigeria and other west African countries in terms of economy, immigration, and diplomatic relations.

Key Points:

  • Sovereignty: Nigeria’s government has the right to maintain its internal affairs without external interference.
  • Judicial Process: Nnamdi Kanu’s case is before the courts, and the government will follow due process.
  • Economic Freedom: Nigeria’s financial freedom is a sovereign right, and the government will not be dictated to by external forces.
  • Religious Freedom: Despite the diversity, Nigeria’s government is committed to protecting the rights of all citizens, regardless of their faith or ethnicity .

A Message to Trump

We understand that your policies may prioritize American interests, but we urge you to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and right to self-determination. Nigeria is not a country to be bullied or coerced. With a growing economy, Nigeria is poised to become a major player on the global stage. Our economic reforms are yielding positive results, and we will not be swayed by external pressures.

Nigerian Youth Resolve

Nigeria as the giant of Africa will continue to assert its sovereignty, protecting its national interests and promoting economic development. We will not be intimidated by external threats or pressures. As stated by Daniel Bwala, an adviser to President Tinubu, “We welcome US assistance as long as it recognises our territorial integrity.”

The Way Forward

To address these challenges, Nigeria and the international community must work together to find solutions that balance state sovereignty with human rights protection. This can be achieved through:

  • Strengthening Domestic Institutions: Building robust and accountable institutions as a crucial stage for upholding sovereignty and defending national interests.
  • Strategic Cooperation: Nigeria should engage in diplomatic efforts to assert its interests and build alliances that promotes its development goals and protect its sovereignty.
  • Clearer Legal Frameworks: Developing clearer legal frameworks and guidelines for humanitarian intervention can help prevent selective application and ensure more effective responses to humanitarian crises.

In conclusion, Nigeria’s sovereignty and stability are paramount, and any attempts to undermine them will be met with resilience and determination. We urge the US government to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and engage in diplomatic efforts to address any concerns. By doing so, we can work together to promote peace, stability, and economic development in the region.
