Resolution: I thought I could do without sex.
It over half of the first month now, in the life of the new year. Exactly, the time when people have started living through their resolutions or are about quitting their different vows. Resolutions are set of principles, believes that spearhead relationships, which extends to social, religious, economic affairs.Resolution is usually geared towards enabling you with projections, after examing your scorecard in the outgoing year, with a focus of what to do to improve your lots, or sustain the already achieved tempo. Our Reporter went into town to know, how well resolutions are lived through, factors that makes it difficult to be complied with, knowing full well that it is a free decision. Resolution covers a wide range of issues from abstinence from sex for the unmarried, remaining faithful with your partner for the married, drunkenness of alcohol, smoking, night crawling and so on.
A minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and the Head teacher of a private school Mrs Grace Akhigbe, agreed that distraction can be a major reason why it is not kept. According to Mr Akintola Morakinyo, Ekiti state based urban planner, i can make resolution at any given time new year presents another beginning, I can plan on how to make it better than the previous year, Work on implementing another phase of my dream. Mr Seun Morire-Philip, a scholar and relationship coach who brought another practical slant agreed that New year resolution is a necessity before the arrival of a new year. It does contain a list of plans, target, goals/visions, character/attitudes to drop and develop etc. To meet up with and attain in a new year. It is believed that when plans are written, it becomes easy to pursue and run with, since it serves like a guide and check on ones activities and programs in a new year. Rahman Akeem, a Muslim cleric, noted that it is simply a decision borne out of an individuals conviction. Resolution as a personal vow, is not in contention but what is most interesting is why decisions taken by an individual is not followed to the end, revelations are rife that such decisions taken on or before 1st of January are most of the time rescinded even before 31st of the same month due to several reasons, According to Atitilola Akinbo, I had planned to remain celibate this year, since am not yet married, stop illicit sex but as you can see am back into it even before the end of January,I feel very ashamed but it obvious resolution wasn’t meant for me. President of Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Neuro psychiatric hospital, Yaba Dr Akerele Raliat, reneging on a resolution is more about lack of discipline, individuals who find it difficult to keep such plans should fashion out a reward system that will encourage them. This reward system can include a special treat, special items or talking about it with your mentor. In another reaction Morire-Philip agreed that People still keep it, although if we take a look at people keeping it and those that are not, the statistics of those that keep it, is quite less to the number that default. And there are different reasons we could attribute to this.
• Economic and financial reasons which I see to be the major reason it hard to keep a new year resolution. Most of the plans people have for the year is usually around capital, and when the economy of the country and their financial ability is not improved, such plans will fail. Sometimes, people set unrealistic resolutions. Not that some resolutions can not be achieved but it may not just be the right or perfect time to pursue those plans. For instance, a newly admitted university student aiming to buy a car in the new year, newly wedded couple drawing a business plan of huge capital even when the financial life of their family is not sufficient yet, a graduate yet to get a job and is already planning marriage. It is interesting, how people draw plans and resolutions for a new year, they make less enquiry about those plans before they set out to pursue them. And when they get to the middle of the whole thing and realise there’s more to realising those plans, they get discouraged and bow out. What many people know is to go into business or become an entrepreneur, many don’t have much knowledge about the whole business process. I.e the losses and gains, the sacrifices to make, the investments etc. Even the bible said, “Is there any man that will build a tower that won’t first count the cost?”
• Laziness.
Many are just lazy to pursue those plans they list out to attain. Some people actually think great and good things happen by chance or luck.
• Inconsistency.
Realising a goal requires much consistency. Rising and falling in the quest to attain a goal might be detrimental to achieving it. If people can launch into pursuing their new year resolutions with that energy that was in them when they were drawing it, many will be achieving their resolutions.
• Attitude (Character) deficiency.
Many just need to develop a strong and positive and attitude towards their life and goals. I.e strong will, determination, focus, zeal.
On the other hand Mrs Akhigbe, shared her personal experience on Resolution as it relates to Soft drink (Mineral) One can decide to stop a particular drink for health reason. Sometime ago, I chose to stop coke and l did but replaced it with Pepsi but now trying to stop Pepsi. Resolutions are easy to say but very difficult to achieve she maintained. As common as the subject may seem, there are those indifferent to the subject For Ms Lydia Okorie, I don’t believe in resolution. Her view is not entirely different from Mrs Ogedi, who claimed that, I just pray and hand my ways over to God, for the bible says we should not lean on our own understanding.
No matter the divide, you belong to. it is often said that new year , new system. It is not only individuals that can retrospect into the outgoing year and project into the new season. Nations can also discontinue certain perceived malady, in other to have a new beginning.
