No fewer than 2,112.776kg of illegal drugs were seized between July 2019 to June 2020 by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Gombe command.
Stating this at the state headquarters on Thursday the Acting state Commander Mrs Nnodim Akuchinyere, added that a total of 127 suspects were arrested, comprising 120 males and 7 females.
The commander said this during a briefing on 2020 International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking with the theme ‘Better knowledge for better care’.
“A total seizure of 2,112.776 kgs of various illicit drugs were seized. This seizure includes 743.64 kgs of cannabis sativa, 340.408 KGS of psychotropic substances 1,056.388 KGS of ‘Suck and Die’, a dangerous chemical.
“18 convictions were secured at the Federal High Court sitting in Gombe and 21 pending cases are at different stages of prosecution. A total number of 88 drug clients were successfully counselled, rehabilitated and reintegrated into the society.
“Between January to June 2020 a total arrest of 87 suspects was made, 82 males and 5 females. A total seizure of 89.559kg of illegal drugs made up of 51.134 kg of cannabis sativa, 38.425 kg of psychotropic substances and 37 litres of ‘Suck and Die’. A total conviction of 7 suspects and 9 pending cases at various levels of prosecution with 4 clients rehabilitated at the treatment Centre,” Akuchinyere stated.
She added that drug use disorder has complex interplay factors that are very much out of the control of the individual and do not deserve punishment, saying that, “when equipped with better knowledge of various issues surrounding drug problem, better care will be provided to give victims of drug abuse quality health and psychological care.”
