Gombe State government on Wednesday, said it is collaborating with National Board for Arabic and Islamic studies (NBAIS) to reposition Almajiri system, adding that this will end vices attached to Tsangaya learning. According to the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Habu Dahiru, this partnership will help learners become more attractive for employers. Dahiru said the state is targeting a full implementation of the Tsangaya Qur’anic education system. “We have gone far by bringing up a work plan that will develop Tsangaya centre at the state level that will coordinate sub units at the local and community levels. These centres will be equipped to provide Tsangaya Qur’anic education and western education and also skill acquisition. “It is going to be a comprehensive education and at the end of the day he will be self reliant. The first thing is to profile the students, teachers and start a capacity building for the teachers that is why if you see the theme the quality assurance people are there. We intend to give them upliftment courses, coupled with examination and certificate which will enable teachers teach.” Dahiru added that efforts are on going to sensitize ulamaas (Islamic teachers) on the need to accept the model. “I expect that we will have large turnout of enrollment from out of school children that are roaming the street, who will be engaged and be useful to the society,” he said. Also speaking, the Acting registrar of National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies Prof. Shafiu Abdullahi said the board is in Gombe to discuss best ways of promoting Tsangaya education. He added, “Gombe has been doing it best, we have interviewed their mission and it is in order. We hope to uplift the teachers with training and sensitization. The government decided to build a central headquarters in Gombe to coordinate other units across all levels.”
