A group under the aegies of EndSARS movement was on Tuesday dispersed by hoodlums at the Rainbow Roundabout, leading to Bauchi Road, leaving members of the group and journalists covering the protest injured.
The group’s placard states, “Stop changing names, reform the police, end police brutality, we call for Social economic justice.
According to a member of the group, Danladi Suleiman, who spoke to our correspondent before the group was dispersed, said the protest has a clear mandate of demanding an end to insecurity and bad governance.
The Periscope Nigeria can confirm that five persons, including journalists were injured in the imbroglio, this includes a cameraman of NTA Jimmy Dantsabta, whose camera was vandalized, Christopher Luka of Viewer Television
Suleiman said, “Our mandate is clear and we are peaceful about it. We are not violent about it. We want government to put an end to SARS and to improve on the welfare of citizens. We expect that we will be protected because our requests are not enormous that they can’t meet it.”
Meanwhile, the state commissioner of Police Shehu Maikudi, said “we are in a democratic setting therefore the right for peaceful protest is allowed, for the miscreants who attempted to hijack the situation the police will look into it, I can assure you. We sent our men out to ensure everyone is protected, as law enforcement we will ensure everyone is protected and we won’t allow the situation to degenerate to the point of anyone loosing his life.”
When asked why the police looked on despite stationing their vehicle at the spot.
“Who knows who the hoodlums or the endSARS, our own is to provide cover for everybody. Unless you are able to distinguish who is who. Many of them never sort for police permit, they are doing it on their own but it is our duty to protect everyone.”
