Deputy Inspector General of police, in charge of training, DIG Lawal Shehu, on Friday announced the decision of the Nigeria Police Force to establish Counter Terrorism Unit, Special Protection Units and border patrol training centre in Gombe.
Shehu disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the governor of Gombe state Inuwa Yahaya, at the government house.
According to Shehu, the establishment of the training centre for educating the special forces is borne out of the donation of the facility to the Nigeria Police Force by Gombe state government.
He said, “That school has multiple purposes, the school will serve the police as a conduit for training Special Protection Unit (SPU ), Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), and border patrol, it is very essential to us, as police we can’t grow or be professional without training and retraining. The IGP, Mohammed Adamu, said I should extend his humble greetings and appreciation to you for finding it worthy to handover the school to the Nigeria Police Force.”
On his part, the governor of Gombe state Inuwa Yahaya said the essence of governance is to provide security to both lives and property.
While expressing optimism that the people of the state will reap the fruit of partnering with the police force, said his government will do everything possible to support the security agencies, especially the police.
“The greatest challenge Nigeria is facing today is that of security, God has made us to be in peace for so long that we have become a sanctuary to people displaced in the states around us. So the security is becoming tasking and it needs support. In line of this we approached the Nigerian police to utilize the school structure that has been lying waste, in order to enhance it operations and provide security for our people,” Yahaya said.
Speaking at the venue of the training centre, Senator representing Gombe North Senator Saidu Alkali said, “the responsibility of any government as enshrined in the 1999 constitution as amended is protection of lives and property, any government that wants to succeed must make sure there is security in the country. As an illustrious son of this place, I will make sure we give the police the necessary support. This is our constituency project in the 2021 appropriation budget.”
Also speaking, Member representing Nafada/Dukku federal constituency Hon. Aishatu Dukku while expressing her excitement at the importance of the project in her constituency said, “the country just witnessed endSARS protest led by the youths, in Dukku we have a lot of able youths who can be employed in the police. I want to call on the Inspector General of Police to think about the youths in Dukku, for you to know Dukku is home to the police, every member of this community will support this project, so that they can be gainfully employed, if you employ the youths you will bring peace to the Nation.”
