Garvey Buchi, Writes from Lagos.
Well, I am still on the reason why SARS should be exterminated.
I am going to take us on a memory lane on the reason(s) SARS (Special anti Robbery Squad) was formed, why we can’t take it any more, probably, a problem to solve.
The Special Anti-Robbery Squad was founded in 1992 by former police commissioner Simeon Danladi Midenda.
Why SARS was formed?
The major reason SARS was formed was when Col. Rindam, a Nigerian army officer was killed by police officers at a checkpoint in Lagos. When the information reached the army, soldiers were dispatched into the streets of Lagos in search of any police officer. The Nigerian police withdrew from checkpoints, security areas and other points of interest for criminals, some police officers were said to have resigned while others fled for their lives.
Due to the absence of police for two weeks crime rate increased and SARS was formed. Due to the existence of already established three anti-robbery squad which was operational at that time, Midenda needed to distinguish his squad from the already existing teams. Midenda named his team Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). After months of dialogue, The Nigerian army and Nigerian police force came to an understanding and official police duties began again in Lagos. The SARS unit was officially commissioned in Lagos following a ceasefire by the army after settlement.
Questions without Answers…
When did SARS become a national scourge and witch-hunt machinery against Nigerian youth with dreadlocks, ear piercings, cars, expensive phones ?
So, with this narrative, now the question is, has this group called SARS ever lived to the true meaning of their creed in the recent time?
Who are their targets now? When has buying IPhones, looking mundane become a thing of crime and associated with robbery?
The special arm of SARS on investigation unit, how many times have they gone without weapon to investigate?
How many times do they get the suspect to the courts in the recent time after proper investigation?
What exactly has become their work since the protection of lives and property are no more in their agenda?
Why do they have to settle matters of a suspect on his or her Atm cards?
Why do we have to agree on to work on a government that legitimatise killing, voluntary violation of our rights?
An ancient word contained in St. Augustine “The confession” rechoed by St. Thomas Aquinas should be reinforce in this situation ” if the government is ungodly and threatening , it is no longer a government, for it has lost its power to stay there” through active participation of citizens we can rebel and clamour for change.
For this reason I was on a street with many affected, some their neighbours, brothers, uncles whose wealth were taken away from these sets who are supposed to protect them.
Has this government of SARS not lost its morals, military or political responsibility?
What argument do you have to tender to withhold these organised protest#Endsarsnow?
Oh, maybe you are a few lucky ones that have escaped this brutality and animalistic treatment found among captives of this group called SARS.
But remember, it could be you, it could be me and it could your loved ones.
That is why we must end SARS, so, Nigerian youth can live.
You talked about reformation, excuse me, what has reformation done since August 2007, what change has it brought?
How do you reform someone that has stayed in a corrupt system for long and has not changed?
OK, you want to argue with them, that they don’t know it is wrong to kill ?
Or that unlawful prosecution is wrong?
What again do you want to reform within the same system if not to overhaul them from the system and set up another, so, those who wlll occupy the new system would see what happen as a deterrent for all to learn?
With this I have offered my idea on what I think should be done.
I say it again, Endsarsnow #
