Gombe has no need for more tertiary institutions -Gov Yahaya
Chima Azubuike, Gombe
Gombe state governor, Inuwa Yahaya on Wednesday berated the immediate past government for the purification of high institutions in the state without adequate funding.
Yahaya disclosed this while receiving the national delegation of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), led by Prof. Ade Adejumo, on an impending industrial action of the branch.
The governor revealed that the recently established University of Science and Technology Kumo by Dankwambo administration was not in the best interest of the state.
He added that the state being small in population requires more investment in basic education than in tertiary education.
“Dankwambo did not care to do anything, that can move the state forward rather than concentrating on Gombe state university, he went to set up another university.
“I don’t see us managing two universities in Gombe state. Already we have polytechnic, college of education and all of them would have been serviced because at inception what we concluded in council was that we were going to have one university that is all inclusive and all encompassing.
“We won’t have needed any college of education. After all we are small in size and our people need more of basic education than university. But with a lot of money wasted there what do we do. If you close shop another strike will come in because we closed a university, and the polytechnic will complain but on the other side there are no resources.”
On his part, branch chairman of ASUU, Gombe state university branch, Oladimeji Lawal insisted that the current administration has not done enough.
“We hope they will sit up and leave up to the expectations of the people of the state in terms of critical intervention in the affairs of Gombe state university, the university is a young university. We want it to stand on proper footing so that proper teaching and learning can take place,” he said
