NYSC still relevant in current Nigeria – Official

The NYSC Scheme was established as an aftermath of the Nigeria Civil War and as a tool to reconstruct , reconcile and rehabilitate the Nation and ensure national unity, integration and development.
This assertion was made by the Director Northeast Area Office, Alh. Ladan Baba when he paid a one day working visit to NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp Amada Gombe State.
Recall that the bill for the scrapping of NYSC has been has passed second reading in the National Assembly.
According to Baba, the Orientation Course has been regimented using collaborating Agencies in order to instill discipline in Corps members and groom them for selfless service to the nation. The course contents have been carefully selected and put together with lectures on national and topical issues, citizenship and leadership skills, social and sports among other things. Corps members must participate in all activities to ensure a hitch free Orientation exercise.
Ladan, Speaking on posting of Corps members to places of primary assignment, noted that posting would be to four critical areas; Rural Infrastructure, Healthcare delivery, education and Agriculture.
He said, “NYSC Scheme was established as an aftermath of the Nigeria Civil War and as a tool to reconstruct , reconcile and rehabilitate the Nation and ensure national unity, integration and development.
“As much as possible, your posting will be done based on your area of specialisation and needs of the Government of the State. I don’t expect any Corps member to pay for posting , relocation or any other service rendered by the NYSC.”
He advised the Corps members to initiate and execute viable projects in their host Communities in order to leave lasting legacies.
He said, “If you execute projects In your host Communities by leaving indelible footprints , you shall be rewarded with the Chairman’s award, State Honours award and Presidential honours award as the case may be.”
On Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme, he revealed that the objective of the Programme was self reliance for Corps members after the service year.
He added, “It does not matter what you have studied,choose a skill from the twelve set skills . It is a Shame to keep collecting money from your parents after the service year. This is no time for sleep ,pick a skill , be an entrepreneur by starting small.”
