NYCN holds town hall meeting Kaltungo

Chairman, Gombe State chapter of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Comrade Abdullahi Bello Yero, has lamented the surge in youth dependence on drugs, alcohol.

Yero stated this on Sunday, shortly after a town meeting organized by Kaltungo Local Government Area of the council, tagged ‘plight of the youth in 21st century’, under the distinguished chairmanship of Dr. Abednego Mailauni Odahson, in an interview with our correspondent.
According to him, rarely would you see young people involved in farming activities, or any form of endeavour without the help of drugs, stressing that it has serious health implications, aside other consequences.

He said, “Taking of drugs and alcohol injures the health. In so many parts around here, some can not work in the farm without the help of drugs. When an individual drinks to a point of addiction, you will find out they can hardly do anything without drugs. Our inviting the NDLEA, the police and other security agencies to talk about the effect of drugs, is geared towards reducing it drastically. As you know, stopping it totally may not be possible but we can ensure it is reduced.”

While lamenting on the rate of unemployment, the youth leader drew a nexus between insecurity and challenges facing the age bracket, stressing that alot is required in educating and encouraging the youth.

“The programme is talking about the challenges facing the Nigerian youth, as you can see the issues range from unemployment, restiveness. We usually organise this kind of programme in order to enlighten and educate.
“This will bring change no matter how small. Remember that an idle hand is a devil’s Workshop. The youth here are focused
“The government should have the welfare of youth in mind because we are the back bone of the country, the backbone of every society. So when they are not empowered it may heighten criminal activities from Insurgency, to robbery,” Yero added.

Also speaking, Comrade Hassan Barde Yohanna, Local Government Chairman of NYCN in Kaltungo, blamed the spate of drunkenness to unemployment.
“This is part of our effort to commemorate International Youth Day and to hear from our guest speakers on the plight of the youth with the aim of not only outlining the challenges but to find possible solutions. Government across all divides must not relent on issues bordering the youth. So as leaders of tomorrow they must be made to stand on their feet.
“The youths of Kaltungo are predominantly poor because of unemployment, and education. We need government to come in to provide away out. The issue of drunkenness is as a result of idleness, an idle hand is a devil’s workshop. My call to the youth is for them to brace things that will bring development to Kaltungo,” Yohanna said.

On his part, Comrade Jonas Dangombe, Vice Chairman NYCN Gombe South said, “We brought this topic because we have seen the life of the youth collapsing. This topic was brought about to help them amend by correcting themselves towards positive change. The idea is not to force them but to encourage them so that can be ready for leadership.”
