Billiri Crisis: Gombe Pays N591m Compensation To Victims
Gombe State government, on Monday, paid N591 million as compensation to some victims of crisis that rocked Billiri local government area in February 2021, over Mai Tangle tussle.
554 victims benefited out of which 8 got N40 million during the event, the disbursement was held at the Mai Tangale Palace in Billiri.
Billiri was thrown into mayhem, over emergence of the new Mai in Tangle kingdom after the demise of the 15th Mai Tangle, Abdul Buba Maisheru.
The violent protesters called to questioning the recognition of the news that the substantive Mai Tangle, Danladi would be declared by the state government, over the candidate with the highest vote.
The state government however said it relied on the existing State law according it the right to set aside decision of the kingmakers in such case.
The commissioner for finance, Muhammad Magaji who spoke to beneficiaries, explained that the sum would be shared among two groups comprising; families of 8 that lost their lives and those that lost property in the fracas.
According to him, “families of the deceased will collect N4million each, worship centres, wounded individuals and those whose properties were touched would also be duly compensated.”
On his part, deputy governor, Dr. Manassah Jattau, who regretted the sad occurrence that led to loss of lives and property, called for healing.
He said, “once a rope has cut, it can never be of same length, no matter how well we try tying it together, my sincere prayer here is that we should witness a change in this.”
