
Recall that SARS was replaced with Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), team following the protest which was hinged on SARS operatives high-handedness.
Although the protest failed to hold in the state, since it commencement Nationwide, until 20th October, 2020 when many youths including journalists were injured at the rainbow roundabout within the metropolis.
Speaking, in an interview with our correspondent on the reason the roundabout was deserted, Abdullahi Maigari said they could not come out because their safety was uncertain.
He noted that the police were on ground last year but could not come to the aid of youths.
Maigari said, “We are marking it online, we can’t come out to carry placard. You remembered what happened to some people that defiled the government and tried to show solidarity with what was trending in other parts of the country.
“The only day they tried it, political thugs dealt mercilessly on those present. I and my friends have chosen to mark it in our various homes, schools without congregating. Our safety can’t be guaranteed forget what they will tell you.”
On her part, Aishatu Kumo, stressed that she can’t risk the attack of last year, adding that the authorities would make scapegoat of erring persons.
According to her, she escaped unhurt because she said meters away from the crowd.
“Infact, my parents must not hear that I joined another protest, some people lost their gadgets, some others beaten blue and black. It will be foolishness to come out this year. I have chosen to mark it in my heart, and on social media,” Kumo said.
Also speaking, Sunday Emmanuel noted that although there was no loss of lives, but the injury suffered was unbearable.
Emmanuel revealed that they were unarmed when group of thugs invaded them.
He said, “We knew something like this may arise so instead of blocking the road, we stayed by the corner. We were by the side with placard and police men were on the other side. Then an SUV with the authority number stopped by and we saw when they (touts) carrying sticks turned then I became frightened. We were beaten to the point some had stitches.
“This year we are marking in our heart, Nigeria knows we are for her growth, development, for the peace in Gombe.”
However, efforts made to reach Police Public Relations Officer, Gombe State Command SP Mary Malum, was abortive.
