Gombe fixes October to sanction defaulting Okada riders
Gombe State Government on Friday said unregistered Motorcycle riders known as Achaba, who where yet to get due approvals from ending of October would be sanctioned.
Also included in the sanction is tricycle operators without necessary registration are to be dealt with law enforcement agencies.
Announcing the decision of council which held on Wednesday, on expanded security, Commissioner for Information and Culture, Julius Ishaya said this would ensure maximum security of lives and property.
According to him, government is worried about the lack of registration of some of the operators, noting that the declaration of council is after due consultation with the leaders of the various unions.
Ishaya explained, “Government and the leaders of Okada, Keke (tricycle) unions have reached an agreement that the ongoing registration of okada, Keke ends by this October. The security operatives and agencies have been directed to sanction any defaulter. Any Keke, Okada operator who is not properly registered by the end of this October will be sanctioned by security operatives.”
Commenting on the restriction of movement as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the commissioner revealed that night travels would not be tolerated, stressing that a greater percentage of accident that occurred at night help doesn’t come easily.
“You may recall that the restrictions for movement were placed on the entire state as a result of Covid-19 from 10pm to 5am. So therefore, council directed and reviewed this restriction that henceforth, the restrictions of movement from within the state and into the state will be from 12 midnight to 5am in the morning and the security agencies have been directed to ensure compliance of this directives.
“Two things have informed the decision of council to improve security, discourage night travels for safety reasons. Most of the crashes at night hardly will you get rescue for this people because it is already late because everyone is already asleep,” he said.
