Gombe only woman lawmaker defects to APC, with 2,000 loyalists
The Member representing Shongom Constituency in the Gombe State House of Assembly Asma’u Iganus, has defected with over 2,000 others to the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).
Iganus who was elected in 2019 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was the only female lawmaker of the 24-member Assembly.
With her defection PDP is left with three members, while APC has 21 others.
Speaking on Thursday at Lapan, Shongom Local Government Area, Iganus said her defection was hinged on the development strides of Governor Yahaya, as well as his leadership style.
She assured the party of her constituents unflinching support to the success of the governor in the coming election.
Iganus said, “We are with you and we are happy to identify with your administration because of the developmental projects you brought to Shongom LGA and to Gombe State entirely.”
On his part, Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, who led chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, to the civic reception of Ignanus expressed delight, at her alignment.
Yahaya assured that he is ready to work with her to ensure success of the APC in 2023 and beyond.
“Even before she made her decision to join the APC, she once came to me and presented a complaint about the need to reconstruct a bridge in her constituency and I granted her wish and did the work without any hesitation.”
He added that the coming in of Asma’u and over 2000 of her supporters could not have come at a better time than now, when the APC-led government in the State is creating an atmosphere of sustainable socio-economic and infrastructural development that would at the long run create jobs for the teeming youths of the State.
Also speaking, Gombe State APC Chairman, Nitte Amangal said the defection of Iganus was based on her personal conviction.
“And faith in the administration of Governor Inuwa Yahaya whose stock in trade is the good and welfare of the people. I wish to assure Hon. Asma’u and all other new entrants will enjoy all rights and privileges of members,” Amangal said.
