World Diabetes Day: Diabetes affects all ages – Consultant Endocrinologist
In commemoration of 2022 World Diabetes day, Society for Paediatric and Adolescents Endocrinology of Nigeria in collaboration with Department of Paediatric Federal Teaching hospital Gombe, on Monday organised a 10-kilometer walk for children with diabetes mellitus.
PERISCOPE NIGERIA reports that stakeholders at the walk called for regular check up of sugar level, as a method of controlling and avoiding low or high blood sugar.
Our Correspondent reports that the walk took place at Federal Teaching hospital Gombe with children, parents and stakeholders in attendance.
The children living with diabetes and their doctors, nurses and parents walked round the hospital to create awareness on the reality of the disease, its complications and management.
Speaking, Dr.Olatoke Lukman, a Consultant Paediatric and Endocrinologist with FTH Gombe, stressed the need for parents to be educated on how to manage and care for children with the disease
He said diabetes mellitus affects all ages, including children who have deficiency of insulin in their bodies and a lot of them are unaware of their status.
Lukman listed, “Genetic, infection and early introduction of cow milk to children and psychological stress as factors contributing to developing type one of the disease.”

He called on parents to visit the hospital for proper medical check up whenever they noticed, “any of their wards frequently urinating and taking excess water, eating too much but losing weight and always tired, or having blurred vision as the care and treatment for children with diabetes at FTH Gombe is free of charge,” Lukman added.
