Succour underway for Precious Umoru, as Gov Obaseki orders reassessment of admission
……..DRP’s intervention
By Chikwado Raphael
The young girl, Precious Umoru, whose admission was withdrawn on the account of her physical disability by the Edo State College of Nursing Sciences has gained the attention of the Governor Godwin Obaseki in the state. On Saturday, the 9th, April, 2023, Miss Precious Umoru and her family had formally engaged our organisation, Disability Rights Protection Initiative, to help her get justice over her lost admission.

The school management, through the Provost Professor Patricia Ukaigwe, had earlier advised Precious to withdraw from the school upon noticing that Precious is a physically disabled person. The Provost went on to describe Precious as not “Flexible Enough” to study in the school. We are however glad for the role the social media had played in pushing Precious’ story forward. After we had provided Miss Precious with a counseling session, we went on to advise the family to meet with the school management.

Yesterday, DRP was on a long phone conversation with Precious. We made sure she had all the counseling and support that she needed during the time she would be meeting with the school management. Today, the 11th April, 2023, around 12:33PM, Precious had called to inform us about the outcome of the meeting.
Precious:
“Hello sir, good afternoon sir.”
DRP/Chikwado:
“How are you, and what about the meeting? How did it go?”
Precious:
“It went very fine sir. Sir, the governor has ordered the school to carry out another medical reassessment on me.”
DRP/Chikwado:
“Well! Let’s see how they will go about this. Though, we are however not comfortable with arrangement. But a big congratulations to you in advance dear Precious!”
Precious:
“Thank you so much sir. I’m very grateful for your support all along.
DRP/Chikwado:
“No worries, Precious. So, did the school ask you to come back for the medical reassessment?
Precious:
“Yes sir. The school asked me to come back on Thursday sir.”
DRP/Chikwado:
“Very well. Was there any formal invitation from the school as to that effect?
Precious:
“yes Sir.”
DRP/Chikwado:
“Very well. Let me quickly inform our legal team in Edo State upon this development, and ask them not to take any further action on this matter pending the outcome of your reassessment on Thursday, okay?”
Precious:
“okay sir. I’m very fine with that.”
Note:
DRP and its members are going to be patient to see what will be the ultimate outcome of the scheduled medical reassessment process by the school management. All ready, we could perceive a flawed process and irregularities with this arrangement. For the time being however, we shall allow the school management to do their work as scheduled. We will be patient with them.
For now we are unable to congratulate or thank the Executive Governor of Edo State until we see that Miss Precious, has received all the necessary attention and support from both the school and government. So, we are thanking Miss Precious for her resilience, courage and determination to speak out. Attached to this post is the formal invitation letter as issued by the school to Miss Precious for her rescheduled “reassessment” on Thursday.
We shall continue to encourage and urge PWDs to always speak out to both the public and organizations for help whenever they believe they have been discriminated against.
