Stop impressing your interviewer, be straightforward, direct
By Femi Akinwumi
We interviewed a guy for a role, he was suitable, he had good qualifications and experience good enough to handle. We believed the applicable emoluments would be good enough to motivate him. We were excited to hire him because it was an urgent need.
When the interview was about to be rounded off, we asked where he stayed to attend the interview, because he came upcountry, usually we could reimburse his expenses.
His response was the snag; he started a long story, how he stayed in his friend’s house, who was out of town. The wife of his friend asked one of the children to vacate a room for him. At the middle of the night, the wife came over, requesting to sleep in the same room with him. According to him, he refused vehemently, saying he wouldn’t do such a thing.
We all looked at each other in bewilderment and shock, and that was it, we dropped his candidacy.
We concluded our trade secrets are not safe with this one, he can’t be trusted, he is not prudent with words and may have other character deficiencies.
When you go for any interview, a job or visa application, only respond to questions you are asked, never try to impress your interviewer with irrelevant information, it could end up determining your chances.
