The Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Dr Manassah Daniel Jatau, has assured the National University Commission of meeting the requirements stipulated for take-off of Lincoln University Campus, Kumo, in Akko LGA.
Recall that the state government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding under the Public-Private Partnership with the Lincoln University College, Malaysia to take over the Gombe University of Science and Technology, Kumo.
The Deputy Governor received the team in his office who were in the state to inspect the site and recommend to the Government on what is to be done for the university to meet the standard practice of running universities.
Jatau appreciated the frankness of the leader of the delegation on the observations and recommendation about the university and assured of government’s readiness to meet all the conditions and recommendations given.
He said the state government has apart from security, made health and education the foremost priorities of their governance because of their importance in conducive atmosphere for growth and development.
“Apart from security which is number zero, as counting begins with zero, health is number one and education is second in our priorities. Government is about continuity. We met the structures in Kumo on ground and we decided on how best we can make use of it to improve on the standard of living of the people. This led to the agreement entered into with the malaysian people who are ready to invest in education in the state.
” We have heard your recommendations and I thank you for being frank. We love people who will tell us the truth for us to do the best. We shall liase with the authorities of lincoln university to ensure doing the best,” he said.
He said governance is about improving the living standard of the people, and organizations are out to assist in providing services to the people, thereby commending the NUC for living up to expectations and pledged to work in synergy with them for the best interest of the people.
” We have upgraded the General Hospital, Kumo and have allocated a lot of money to make it a standard hospital that can serve as a Teaching Hospital when the university becomes fully operational,” he added.
The Leader of the delegation, Dr Noel Biodun Saliu, said the team observed that the structures having been erected for a long time and not being put to use have started deteriorating, calling on the Government to ensure renovation before commencement of academic activities.
Saliu also observed that there is a shortage of academic staff offices, making the structure meant for lab technologists and attendants converted for academic staff offices.
He further observed that under the agreement, the state government and the Lincoln University should ensure that roles are clearly spelt out such that anything that can be brought from Malaysia must not fall short of what is obtainable in the Campus nor the standard operational in Malaysia.
Saliu pointed out that their visit was only to inspect site and after them the Resource Committee will come to inspect the available resources to ensure that everything is in place before commencement of academic activities.
He commended the effort of the state government in all sectors of the economy including education, and appreciated the warm reception accorded them during their visit.
