The Almajiri system has been a longstanding issue in the northern part of Nigeria, particularly in states where Islamic education has a deep-rooted tradition.

Almajiri refers to children who are sent to Islamic schools to study the Quran but often end up living in deplorable conditions, begging for survival. This article will argue that the Almajiri issue requires comprehensive reforms that address not only the immediate challenges these children face but also the underlying socio-economic factors that perpetuate this system.

The Almajiri system traditionally served as a means for imparting Islamic education. However, over time, it has devolved into a system that neglects the welfare and holistic development of the children involved. Many Almajiri children live in abject poverty, lacking access to basic amenities such as food, shelter, healthcare, and education beyond the Quran. Consequently, they are often forced into street begging as a means of survival.

It is imperative to prioritise the immediate needs of the Almajiri children. Governments, Civil Society Organisations, and communities must work together to provide these children with adequate food, shelter, healthcare, and education opportunities. Temporary rehabilitation centers can be set up to house and support them while long-term solutions are being developed.

To address the root causes of the Almajiri system, it is crucial to tackle the socio-economic factors that contribute to its continuation. Poverty, inadequate access to quality education, and limited economic opportunities are significant challenges facing communities in the northern region. Initiatives aimed at poverty alleviation, vocational training programs, and economic empowerment can help provide sustainable solutions for families, reducing the reliance on the Almajiri system as an alternative.

Reforming the educational system is vital to provide the Almajiri children with a well-rounded education that goes beyond solely religious studies. Integrating secular subjects into the curriculum will equip them with knowledge and skills that can lead to better opportunities in the future. Additionally, teachers in the Almajiri system should receive proper training and support to deliver quality education in safe and conducive environments.

The stigmatisation and segregation faced by Almajiri children need to be addressed to promote their social integration within society. Public awareness campaigns should be launched to challenge negative perceptions and foster a culture of inclusivity and empathy. Engaging religious leaders, community leaders, and opinion shapers will be essential in breaking down barriers and creating an atmosphere of acceptance.

Resolving the Almajiri issue requires a multi-faceted approach that addresses immediate challenges while simultaneously tackling the socio-economic factors that perpetuate the system. By providing comprehensive support, reforming the educational system, and promoting social integration, we can create a society where every child, regardless of their background, has access to quality education, healthcare, and a chance for a brighter future. It is only through collective efforts and a genuine commitment from all stakeholders that we can put an end to the plight of the Almajiri children and build a more equitable and inclusive society in northern Nigeria.
