Int’l Day of Girl Child : Gender Specialist urges authorities on safe, inclusive spaces for girls with disabilities
A Gender-Based Violence Specialist, Barrister Mwalin Naomi-Abdu, has called on authorities to create safe and inclusive spaces for girls with disabilities.

Naomi-Abdu, who doubles as Vice Chairperson Nigerian Bar Association and International Federation of Women Lawyers Gombe State branch, made this disclosure on Wednesday, in a message to our correspondent.

PERISCOPE NIGERIA reports that the theme of International Day of Girl Child 2023 is “Invest in girls’ rights: Our leadership, our well-being”.
According to her, addressing the needs of girls with disabilities require a multifaceted approach, adding that the creation of such spaces would ensure social integration and empowerment of girls to to thrive and contribute to society.
Naomi-Abdu made special emphasis on healthcare, education, adding that girls with disabilities require support.
She said, “We must work towards inclusive education systems that provide reasonable accommodations and support for girls with disabilities, ensuring they have equal access to quality education. Additionally, healthcare services should be inclusive and available to all, addressing the specific needs of girls with disabilities. It is imperative that we create safe and inclusive spaces that foster the social integration and empowerment of girls with disabilities, allowing them to thrive and contribute to society.”
While expressing optimism that the commemoration would yield greater prospects for girls by dismantling barriers, Naomi-Abdu added, “As we commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child, let us not forget our responsibility to uplift and empower girls with disabilities. By dismantling barriers and providing equal opportunities, we can foster a world where every girl, regardless of ability, is afforded the chance to dream, learn, and achieve her goals, free from discrimination or exclusion.”
