NBA Committee calls for investment in security of lives, property
…..frowns at recent killings in Gombe
The Human Rights Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Gombe branch, has condemned the killings of 58-year-old mother of eight Aishatu Abdullahi and Yosi Yusuf, a College of Education Billiri student which occured recently.
Recall that Abdullahi on Friday was murderered by suspected criminals who invaded her home, following her failure to yield her mobile phone, while Yusuf was killed on Sunday, in her off campus abode by criminals with knife.
In press statement signed on Monday by Mwalin Naomi-Abdu, the Vice-chairman NBA Gombe branch, who doubles as Chairman Ethics and Human Rights committee, the group described the two separate attacks as heartbreaking.
The statement partly read, “The Human Rights Committee NBA Gombe branch expresses its deep anguish and condemnation over the recent heartbreaking incidents that led to the untimely deaths of Aishatu Abdullahi, a 58-year-old woman,of Jekadafari in Gombe and Yosi Yusuf, a student of the Gombe State College of Education Billiri all at their residence.
“These acts of violence and loss of precious lives in our beloved Gombe State have shaken our community to its very core. These senseless atrocities highlight the urgent need for justice and a renewed commitment to the safety and security of our citizens.”
While commending the police and other security agencies for their feat in unraveling the killers of Abdullahi, Naomi-Abdu, urged them to intensify efforts in prosecuting perpetrators of heinous crimes in the state.
“We commend the prompt action taken by law enforcement authorities in arresting two suspects in connection with the murder of Aishatu Abdullahi at Jekadafari,we equally urge the general public, especially women, to prioritize their personal safety and security.
“Such decisive measures demonstrate the importance of swift justice in these troubling times. However, we urge the authorities to intensify their efforts and ensure a thorough investigation to bring all those responsible to account.
“The tragic demise of Yosi Yusuf, a young and promising student, paints a chilling picture of the vulnerability that persists within our communities.
“The Nigerian Bar Association, Gombe Branch, calls upon the security agencies to prioritise this case, diligently pursue the truth, and ensure that the perpetrators face the full weight of the law,” she added.
While expressing the group’s commitment to human rights and justice, she demanded for solidarity in the combat of crime and other forms of criminality, adding “that we unite as a community to combat these heart-wrenching instances of violence.We implore anyone with information pertaining to these cases or any related criminal activities to come forward and help the authorities in their pursuit of justice.”
She called on government to invest more in securing lives and property, “The safety and security of our citizens are of paramount importance, and we call upon the government and relevant stakeholders to collaborate and invest ample resources to address the root causes of such heinous acts. We must work steadfastly to prevent the recurrence of these unspeakable atrocities and cultivate an environment where all individuals can live without fear,” the statement added.
