……..decries marginalisation
A Human Right Advocate and Gender-Based Violence Specialist, Mwalin Naomi-Abdu, on Saturday urged stakeholders to prioritise Persons With Disabilities as the world commemorate 16 days of activism.

She made this plea in a chat with our correspondent in Gombe State, on the sideline of 2023 16 days of activism.
Our correspondent reports that 2023 theme is ‘UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls’, commences from 25th November to 10th December.

According to Naomi-Abdu, “The disproportionate impact of Gender-Based Violence on the marginalised community of persons with disability is alarming and appalling. The 16 Days of Activism provides an opportunity for us to unite with individuals, organisations, and communities worldwide to address this pervasive issue and work towards a society free from violence and discrimination.”
While decrying the challenges of PWDs in communities Naomi-Abdu said, “Persons with Disabilities face unique challenges when it comes to accessing justice, support services, and protection from violence. It is important that we raise awareness on these issues and the need to invest and empower the community to foster an inclusive society that upholds the rights and dignity of every individual.”

She disclosed that during the 16 days of activism and beyond, stakeholders should continue to collaborate with “disability rights organisations, community groups, government agencies, and other stakeholders to amplify our advocacy efforts aiming to break down barriers and promote gender equality.
“It’s a time to call on the stakeholders involved and the society at large to recognise and prioritise the needs and rights of Persons With Disabilities in the fight against Gender-Based Violence. It is of paramount importance that all initiatives, policies, and interventions are fully inclusive and ensure equal access to justice and support for survivors with disabilities. Let’s create a world where every person, regardless of ability, lives free from violence and oppression,” Naomi-Abdu added.
