The Kano State Deputy Governor,
Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has disclosed that the New Nigeria Peoples Party-led administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, inherited over N500 billion by the immediate past government of Dr Abdullahi Umar Gabduje, in the state.
Gwarzo noted that the said amount was suppose to exceed the figures as the current administration is still in the process of counting the debt profile of the state under the former governor, who’s also the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress.
The Deputy Governor who made the disclosure at the North-West zonal meeting the NNPP which held in Kaduna, noted that the current administration came into office inheriting a government that left nothing but huge debt on ground.
This was just as he added that on assumption of office, governor Abba Kabir Yusuf ensured he tackled the issue of payment of full salaries to workers in the state workforce and other challenges bedeviling them.
The meeting, according to party’s North-west Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Bello, was organized to commend the party for its achievements accomplished in a short period of after it’s outing the 2023 elections.
The Deputy Governor assured party members and supporters at the event that the NNPP would not disappoint the good people of Kano State.
He also highlighted the efforts of the current state government under governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in managing available resources judiciously in the state.
He said, “Upon assuming office, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf ordered the full payment of salaries.Prior to our administration, people’s salaries were severely deducted.
“Furthermore, due to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s compassion, starting this month, the state will be disbursing retirement gratuities, especially the death benefits to families of deceased retirees. The first beneficiaries will be those from levels one to six, as they are junior staff who have suffered the most.
“We have allocated N6 billion for this purpose. The screening process is underway, and by the end of this month, many people will receive their death benefits and gratuities. This initiative will continue, and our goal is to clear all outstanding gratuities within the next two years.
“We came into office inheriting a government that left us with nothing but debt. Initially, it was N300 billion but now it is approaching N500 billion and we are still counting. Once we complete the assessment, we will inform Nigerians especially our fellow Kano residents about the total debt left behind.”
Meanwhile, a communique issued at the end of the meeting by party’s Northwest chairman, Shehu Bello, commended Kano state Governor, Engr. Abba Yusuf for fulfilling his campaign promises to the citizens of Kano.
Bello also praised the party’s state and national lawmakers for their steadfastness and dedication to the well-being of the Nigerian people.
He expressed confidence that the party’s members in the national assembly would make significant contributions to the nation’s growth leveraging on their knowledge and experience.
