Benue State Government will on Friday destroy drugs worth over N100 million at the Muhammad Buhari Mother and Child Hospital.

The 120 bed hospital was completed and inaugurated in March 17, 2022 by the then Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha on behalf of the then president.

The gigantic project was one of the 33 projects handled by Sustainable Development Goals across the state.

But the immediate past administration of Samuel Ortom did not make use of the hospital .

Inaugurating the project on behalf of the then President, Muhammad Buhari, the then SGF said that the establishment of the project was to address the maternal and child mortalities in the country.

“The hospital,” according to the then president, “was fully equipped with state of the arts equipment.”

But the present administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia has moved to the place.

According to the Chief Medical Director, Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, Dr Stephen Hwande who flagged off the hospital on Wednesday said that the hospital is now been put to use.

Speaking to our correspondent on the phone on Wednesday, the Information Officer of BSUTH,
Cephas Hough, said that services have commenced at the hospital.

When asked why the drugs were left to expire, the Information Officer expressed concern why the drugs were not dispensed, stating the former CMD BSUTH was to answer the question.

Hough said, “Services have commenced there (the hospital) some of the departments at (BSUTH) have been moved to the place. The place is going to be functional 24 hours.”

He added that the management of the hospital in conjunction with NAFDAC would be destroying the expired drugs worth over N100 million kept in the drugs store.

Hough said, “The CMD visited the place (Mother and Child Hospital) today to flag off the place and it has been decided that the expired drugs be destroyed on Friday, (November, 3rd, 2023.)

“The drugs worth over N100 million they were kept in the drug store, those drugs would be burnt down and NAFDAC will come and the destruction will be done publicly on Friday.”
