The Comprehensive and Inclusive Women’s Health Project in Nigeria, a Non-Governmental Organisation, supported by Christoffel Blending Mission CBM UK, CBM Australia and CBM New Zealand, has carried out the Vesico Virginal Fistula, surgery for 66 women in Taraba.

Professor Sunday Lengmang, the Project Director of Evangel VVF Centre, at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital Jos, disclosed this to our correspondent on Wednesday in Jalingo.

Lengmang said the decision was to address challenges of reproductive health amongst women and ensure a healthy society.

He also disclosed that the organisation is targeting 560 women and girls, including those with disability for surgical interventions to address Vesico Virginal Fistula, as well as other reproductive health issues in Taraba.

Lengmang noted that the centre has trained over 20 nurses, doctors and midwives on primary and secondary prevention of obstetric fistula in the state, just as he said, 20 community health workers have undergone training to identify high-risk pregnant women and girls, dealing with obstetric fistula in the state for immediate attention.

“Evangel VVF Centre’s medical team which arrived Jalingo last week has successfully performed Vesico Virginal Fistula, surgery for 66 women.

“The Comprehensive and Inclusive Women’s Health Project in Nigeria decision to carry-out the free medical services is to help address the challenges of reproductive health amongst women and ensure a healthy society. We are targeting 560 women and girls, including those with disability for surgical interventions to address Vesico Virginal Fistula, as well as other reproductive health issues in Taraba.

“To achieve the desire target, we have trained over 20 nurses, doctors and midwives on primary and secondary prevention of obstetric fistula in Taraba, and we have also trained 20 community health workers to identify high-risk pregnant women and girls, dealing with obstetric fistula in the state for immediate attention.

“The center has also formed and trained 16 Community Advocacy and Response Teams to lead advocacy, community awareness and sensitisation at the local government level, and as well identify patients at risk of prolonged obstructed labour, provide follow-up and link them to hospitals to prevent vesico virginal fistula from developing,” the project Director disclosed.

 Lengmang identified poverty as a major cause of Vistula amongst women, and expressed that the centre is determined to improve the women and girls health, especially those in their reproductive stages.
