The International Writers Association has congratulated Jennifer Finney Boylan, on her emergence as the President of PEN America.
The statement, signed by IWA President Wole Adedoyin, expressed the organisation’s strong support for Boylan and her leadership in this critical role.
Jennifer Finney Boylan, an acclaimed author and L.G.B.T.Q. rights advocate, was elected President of PEN America on Monday, December 5, 2023. This marks a significant step forward for the organization, which has long been at the forefront of defending free speech and literary expression worldwide.
Boylan brings a wealth of experience to her new position. She has written 18 books, including best-selling memoirs, novels, and thrillers. Her writing tackles themes of identity, gender, and the human experience with honesty and insight.
Beyond her literary achievements, Boylan has been a vocal advocate for L.G.B.T.Q. rights and equality. She served as a national co-chair of GLAAD, an L.G.B.T.Q. advocacy organisation, and contributed regularly as an opinion columnist for The New York Times.
Her commitment to free expression and human rights aligns perfectly with PEN America’s mission. The organisation faces numerous challenges, including attacks on free speech, censorship, and the silencing of marginalized voices.
Boylan’s election comes at a crucial time for PEN America. With the rise of authoritarianism and the increasing threats to freedom of speech around the world, the organisation’s work is more critical than ever.
According to the statement, IWA believes that Boylan’s leadership will be instrumental in guiding PEN America through these challenging times. The organization expresses its full support for her vision and commitment to defending the fundamental right to free expression.
The IWA is confident that Boylan will lead PEN America with courage, integrity, and an unwavering dedication to its core values. The organisation looks forward to working with her to ensure that the voices of writers and artists continue to be heard and celebrated around the world.
With Boylan at the helm, PEN America is poised to continue its vital work in defending and promoting free speech and literary freedom globally. The IWA offered its most sincere congratulations to Ms. Boylan and wished her the very best in her new role.
