Suspected Boko Haram insurgents, early morning of Friday, stormed Unguwar Kori Ward, Geidam Local Government Area, Yobe State, killing six persons and injuring scores.
The six persons, according to reliable sources, comprised the community’s COCIN Church pastor, four other civilians and one local vigilante, although some locals said the exact number of casualties could not be identified as at Friday afternoon.
“They (the insurgents) stormed the ward about two hours before dawn prayer, I think by 3am, shooting sporadically, and setting shops and houses ablaze,” a reliable local, who would not mention his name.
“They kolledbavchurch pastor, slaughtered two persons and shot two to death while the local vigilantly met his own death when he stepped on an explosive suspected to have been planted by the insurgents while lending a helping hand in dousing the blaze gutting the houses and shops, ” he disclosed.
“we could not determine the exact number of casualties up to Friday noon, but security agents have since been deployed to the scene to restore security in the community, ” another source, who simply mentioned his name as Idris.
Confirming the killing of the COCIN pastor, the Yobe State Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria, Bishop Yohanna Audu, said, “the terrorists stormed the house of the COCIN pastor and killed him and a few other church members; we are still gsthering more information.”
A local, Babagana Aisami, also confirmed the killing of at least six persons, including the pastor and an aged school teacher by the terrorists, who also attacked a youth recreation center, brothels and some alcohol drinking joints.
Another local, Musa Inuwa, said, “the severely frightened and traumatized residents of locations surrounding Unguwar Kori are already fleeing their homes and dispersing to Geidam town and other safe locations.”
Yobe State Police Command spokesman, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the attack, but could not give the exact number of casualties, saying, “the military have not determined that yet.”
