….seeks extension of maternity leave in Gombe
The Civil Society-Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria has advocated for the release of nutrition budget in Gombe State, adding that it would ensure investment especially under five children.

Speaking at an advocacy visit to Commissioner for Local Government and Community Development, Abdulkadir Muhammed, on Thursday, Gombe State Coordinator CS-SUNN Comfort Mukollo, also harped the need for extension of maternity leave in the state, stressing that it contributes to healthier and more resilient society.
Periscope Nigeria reports that this advocacy was organised in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund.

Mukollo commended the state government for its efforts in ensuring the well-being of Gombe children, adding that the government would achieve more by ensuring release of funds to boost nutrition.
Mukollo said, “Maternity leave is a cornerstone of maternal and child health, playing a vital role in the physical and emotional recovery of mothers and the early development of newborns. Extending maternity leave to six months aligns with global best practices, promoting improved maternal health, reducing postpartum depression and fostering crucial bonding between mothers and infants. This, in turn, contributes to healthier families and a more resilient society.
“Furthermore, I urge your support in releasing additional funds dedicated to nutrition programmes for children under five. Adequate nutrition during these formative years is indispensable for optimal physical and cognitive development. By prioritising this investment, we not only address immediate health concerns but also lay foundation for a robust and capable future workforce in Gombe State.”

Commenting further Mukollo, called on Muhammed to champion the cause of her team’s advocacy, “We humbly request for the release of the Local Government nutrition funds. Your intervention and support are crucial to effecting positive change for the women and children of Gombe State. Your influence can pave the way for healthier and more prosperous future.”
On his part, Muhammed lauded the efforts of CS-SUNN, adding that the current administration is a listening government.
“This is a government that listens to the call of the people. In this case it’s not the people that will do the call but it will be you who will blow the trumpet. You are going to have sensitisation with all the local governments to know what is happening,” the Commissioner said.
On extension of maternity leave, Muhammed urged CS-SUNN to write to the governor, adding “You need to write to the state governor through the Secretary to State Government. Our doors are open, whatever you feel we need to do to assist you we will do because we believe in your mission.”
