Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya has announced the donation of N6.6 million to support Nigeria Legion of the state chapter.
Yahaya who was represented by his deputy Dr Manassah Jatau, at emblem launch and the wreath laying held at Pantami Township Stadium Gombe State, said the sacrifices of the ex-officers were immeasurable.
Our correspondent reports that Yahaya led heads of security agencies in the state as well as Speaker and Chief Judge on the wreath laying in honour of the dead service men.
According to Yahaya, the peace that is enjoyed today was a result of the calculated efforts of the ex-officers both dead and alive.
He appealed to guests to donate generously, urging them to redeem their pledges as at when due.
He said, “Our experience today in Nigeria challenges us all to do all we can for peace to reign. Much as this has been he reality, many people usually forget those that have worked for place to be attained and are still pursuing
“Unfortunately, in the pursuit of this noble course many ave paid the supreme price of losing their lives, leaving their dependents in misery. Some that were fortunate and did not pay the supreme price are either maimed or suffering from permanent disabilities that has hindered them from engaging in any activities to earn a living.
“Such acts are some of the ways that we the living can embark on to remember the fallen heroes, veterans, widows and orphans. This has been a long time tradition and we are enjoined to donate generously so that the Nigerian Legion can render assistance to the needy families of the fallen heroes and veteran alike.”
The governor noted that security should not be neglected to security agencies alone urging residents to cooperate by yielding relevant information towards nipping insecurity in the bud.
“It is on this note that I call on all the residents in Gombe to please cooperate support and help the statutory security personnel and those in authority with timely information to prevent the occurrence of incidents, rather than reporting late, when the harm must have been carried out,” Yahaya added.
Also speaking, Chairman Gombe State chapter of Nigeria Legion Sgt. Adamu Dogo (retd.) noted that the country has been fair by consistently paying members pension, while urging for an increase, “Since they are paying us our pension but what I’m appealing for is an increase. Since the Federal Government knows that we have widows, orphans they should help us even in terms of employment. They should be able to give Nigeria Legion employment quota.”
