……Service urges residents on extinguishers
The Commanding Officer, Federal Fire Service Gombe State Command, Deputy Controller Ayuba Jonah-Sule on Saturday said most fire incidences in the state are caused by electricity.

Speaking in an interview with our correspondent following Thursday fire incidences at three locations namely Transmission Company of Nigeria North-East Sub-regional office, along Dukku road Gombe, Tudun wadan pantami layin dogon karfe, Liji behind OANDO filling station, involving two bed rooms, Jonah-Sule described the outbreaks as unfortunate.

According to him, his men rescued estimated 2.1m out of 8 million worth of the affected property.
He said, “In one single day, on Thursday my officers responded to three calls. One from Transmission Company of Nigeria North-East Sub-regional office,Along dukku road Gombe. it a fire involving electrical feeder used for electrical distribution purposes, which covering an area of about 400 by 800metres.Fire extinguished by the use of one medium jet of water working from ffs 193.
“The second was in Tudun wadan pantami layin dogon karfe. It is a fire involving five bedrooms and one detached room used for residential purpose which covers an area of about 50 by 50metres. Fire extinguished by used of several bucket of water and sand by the occupants before the arrival of Federal Fire Service(FFS 193). The third was Liji behind OANDO filling station, it is a fire involving two bed rooms flat used for residential purposed, which covering an area of about 40 by 50metres. Fire extinguished by the used of one medium jet of water working from ffs 193.”

While lamenting the challenges of fighting fire in the state Jonah-Sule called on residents to endeavour to have safety equipment especially extinguishers.
“Many people just erect public and private buildings, more or less very big structures without making provision for fire safety or an extinguisher. They are not safety conscious. If every house has one or two effective fire extinguishers, fire incidents can be controlled with the first stage or the second stage. It is when it gets to the third, fourth, and fifth stages that it requires the intervention of fire professionals, by then, the fire would have gone beyond the use of a fire extinguisher. Let every household get at least one or two fire extinguishers. This also applies to schools, hotels, banks, and other public buildings,” Jonah-Sule added.
