In a proactive move to address security concerns and rehabilitate youth, Gombe State Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Usman, received over 126 repentant thugs, known locally as “Kalare Boys.”

This strategic initiative move comes after approximately 50 individuals voluntarily surrendered in December 2023.
Usman emphasised the importance of rehabilitation, stating that a holistic approach is necessary to address the root causes of youth involvement in activities that compromise security.
Thorough vetting processes, counselling sessions, and collaboration with community leaders and social workers are in place to ensure the genuine intention of the repentant youths.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to channel the energy of these individuals into positive endeavors, fostering their reintegration into society. The Commissioner’s commitment to rehabilitation aligns with broader efforts to address the socioeconomic factors influencing youth engagement in criminal activities.
Speaking at the Gombe Police Headquarters, Sheikh Hamza Adamu Abdulhamid, Chairman of the Council of Ulama’u in the IZALAH organisation, delivered a powerful sermon encouraging the Kalare Boys to surrender their weapons and embrace a life of positive contribution to society.

The collaboration between religious leaders, law enforcement, and community figures signifies a holistic approach to addressing the challenges faced in Gombe metropolitan areas. It aims not only to rehabilitate repentant individuals but also to prevent the recurrence of security issues.

The recent registration of repentant Kalare Boys who surrendered willingly has become a significant step forward in addressing security challenges in Gombe. These individuals, associated with various camps, have chosen a different path for their futures. The transformative event at the Gombe State Police Command saw the active involvement of DCP Yusuf Yelwa, Alhaji Aliyu Babangida, Comrade Abba Pantami, and Haji Shehu.
DCP Yusuf Yelwa highlighted the importance of community engagement and collaboration with law enforcement agencies. Alhaji Aliyu Babangida emphasized the role of community leaders, while Comrade Abba Pantami contributed insights into socioeconomic factors influencing youth involvement in criminal activities. Haji Shehu conveyed the state government’s commitment to supporting initiatives fostering peace and security.
This collaborative effort aims to create a safer environment, emphasising community engagement as a key element in the overall strategy for lasting change. The hope is to build a community where repentant individuals can become positive contributors, ensuring a more secure and harmonious Gombe State.
