Gombe State Government on Wednesday approved the state Nutrition Policy to address the problem of malnutrition which has been underlying cause of about 50 per cent diseases in individuals, household, community and state.

The State Commissioner of Budget and Economic Planning, Alhaji Salihu Baba Alkali, informed journalists after the State Executive Council meeting, presided by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.
According to him, the Policy will last for five years between 2023-2027, while the State Government is committing over N2.3 billion for its successful implementation to ensure malnutrition especially in children is reduced drastically in the state.
Alkali said the major objective of the Food and Nutrition Policy which covers 2023-2027 is to improve food security, in households, community, local government areas and state level.
Others are to improve access to water and sanitation services at community and household level as well as to cooperate with development partners to ensure preventive measures with regards to food and Nutrition challenges.
Major targets of the policy according to Alkali is to reduce proportion of people who suffer hunger by 2027 from the baseline of year 2018, to reduce prevalence of diet- related non – communicable diseases by 50 per cent by 2027 from the baseline of 2018.
Also, to increase access to potable water supply from 21 per in 2018 to 40 per cent by 2027 and women to enjoy six months paid maternity leave in all MDAs and establishment of creches in all the MDAs in the state by 2027.
As a Multi- Sectoral Plan of Action 2023-2027, it will be used by stakeholders to ensure attainment of sustainable development goals by 2027 in six priority areas of Food and Nutrition Security, enhancing caregiving capacity , and enhancing provision of quality health services and to improve capacity to address food and insecurity problems .
Others are raising awareness and understanding of the problem of malnutrition and resource allocation to food and Nutrition Security at all levels.
This policy in collaboration with development partners will benefit the state by improving nutrition and reduce malnutrition and it will also help boost its economic growth, productivity and human capital development.
