The Enugu State Internal Revenue Service has closed Enugu ShopRite and SPAR for failing to remit purchase tax collected in their malls to the government.
In a statement released on Tuesday morning following the enforcement operation, the service criticized the malls and stores involved for failing to submit withholding purchase taxes despite receiving multiple warning notices.
As per a declaration endorsed by the service representative, Nnamdi Eneh, ESiRS authorities have also shut down Roban Stores and Mama Onyinye restaurant, along with others, for committing the same violation.
Eneh explained that the taxes government requires from malls, stores, and businesses encompass a purchase tax applied to goods purchased by customers whenever they shop at their establishments.
