…….A call to embrace the power of verse
The International Writers Association has joined the global community in celebrating World Poetry Day, held annually on March 21st.
PERISCOPE NIGERIA reports that this day serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring impact poetry has on our lives, fostering empathy, igniting creativity, and offering solace in a complex world.
According to a press statement signed on Thursday by acting President of IWA Wole Adedoyin, he said Poetry, in all its diverse forms, transcends borders and languages, adding that from the lyrical epics of ancient Greece to the vibrant slam poetry scene of today, verse has served as a potent tool for storytelling, social commentary, and personal expression.
“Through concise yet evocative language, poets capture the essence of the human experience, giving voice to emotions and ideas that resonate across cultures and generations.
“In today’s fast-paced world, the IWA emphasises the importance of slowing down and appreciating the beauty and power of words. Poetry compels us to pay attention to detail, to find meaning in the ordinary, and to explore the depths of human emotion. It invites us to contemplate the world around us with fresh eyes, fostering a deeper understanding of ourselves and others.
“Moreover, World Poetry Day serves as a springboard for promoting literacy and fostering a love for language. By encouraging the reading and writing of poetry, we nurture creativity and critical thinking skills in individuals of all ages,” the statement partly read.
Adedoyin noted that Poetry workshops, public readings, and open mic nights create vibrant spaces for communities to connect and celebrate the power of words, while lauding the dedication of poets worldwide who continue to push the boundaries of language and expression.
Adedoyin said, “Their work enriches our lives, sparking conversations, challenging perspectives, and inspiring action.
“This World Poetry Day, the IWA invites everyone to embrace the magic of verse. Explore the works of established poets, discover the voices of emerging writers, or even try your hand at writing a poem yourself.
“Let us celebrate the power of poetry to connect us, inspire us, and offer a glimpse into the beauty and complexity of the human condition.”
The International Writers Association encouraged everyone to read a poem by their favourite poet.
“Attend a local poetry reading or open mic night.
“Participate in online poetry communities and share your own work.
“Write a poem about something that matters to you.
“Support organisations dedicated to promoting poetry and literacy.
“Let us join hands and celebrate the enduring legacy of poetry on World Poetry Day and beyond,” Adedoyin added.
