Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, has announced the implementation of dry season farming by cultivating 118,657 hectares of wheat across 15 states.
He disclosed that this initiative aims to promote year-round farming practices.
Kyari delivered a speech on Monday, highlighting the latest progress on President Bola Tinubu’s accomplishments within the agricultural industry.
He mentioned that the ministry provided assistance to 107,429 wheat farmers, which led to a production of 474,628 metric tonnes.
Kyari said, “Procured and distributed to all states and FCT 58,500 metric tonnes of milled rice, to dampen escalating prices. Fortification of crops with Vitamin A micro-nutrient to enrich nutrition content and health value of food commodities.”
In addressing the ongoing issue of rising food prices, Kyari stated that efforts have been made to enhance food production.
He mentioned that this encompassed providing 60,432 metric tons of upgraded seeds, 887,255 metric tons of seedlings, 138 value kits, 501,726 liters of agrochemicals, 62,328.5 metric tons of inorganic fertilisers, 1,000 kilograms of fungicide, and 33,200 pieces of equipment to farmers involved in various value chains to boost production.
Kyari said,“Received 2.15 million bags of fertiliser from the Central Bank of Nigeria for distribution to farmers free of charge. Improvement of farmland security with the provision of additional resources to Agro Rangers and other security agencies.”
He added that in support of livestock and animal well-being, the Federal Government acquired and dispensed 14,056,467 shots of vaccines for anthrax spores and foot-and-mouth diseases for targeted vaccination campaigns in 22 high-risk states situated across various geopolitical regions in Nigeria.
