The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulamlik Sarkindaji, has decided not to attend the proposed wedding ceremony for 100 orphan girls in his constituency, leading to the cancellation of the event.
Sarkindaji made the decision in response to the Women’s Affairs Minister, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, taking legal action against the Speaker to prevent the wedding from taking place.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, the Speaker revealed that the minister had exceeded her authority. He suggested that the minister should assume responsibility for overseeing the wedding ceremony.
The Speaker confirmed that he had already provided financial assistance to the parents of the girls through the traditional leaders and clerics of his constituency. He assured that he had no intention of retracting this support.
