The political discourse in Edo State has recently been clouded by baseless accusations and sensationalised stories from the APC’s media strategists. A notable example is the bursted false claim about the Edo State Governor allegedly diverting a truckload of rice, an attempt to overshadow the fact that Governor Obaseki supported Edo people with food palliatives through churches and mosques. These repetitive tactics serve to distract from the pressing need for meaningful engagement and policy discussions.

As the gubernatorial election approaches, it is crucial that the focus shifts to substantive issues. Monday Okobholo, the APC candidate, has yet to present a clear vision or manifesto for the future of Edo State, depriving voters of the opportunity to evaluate his plans and leadership potential. Edo’s citizens, known for their sophistication, deserve leadership that informs and inspires rather than misleads.

The upcoming September 21 election is about more than just filling a position; it is about setting a precedent for effective governance that can propel Edo State forward. Voters must demand accountability and clarity from their candidates, ensuring strong leadership in Edo State. This demand starts by asking the APC to present their candidate for public scrutiny and to stop hiding him.

The APC must move away from the old playbook of “rice politics” and focus on empowering their candidate to engage meaningfully with the people of Edo State. The electorate deserves leaders who prioritize integrity, competence, vision, and communication, starting with this critical election.

Therefore, we call on the APC to stop the propaganda and focus instead on helping their candidate to effectively communicate.
