The Advocacy for Disability Act, a consortium of five Civil Society Organizations, Joint Association of Persons with Disability Gombe State Chapter, Gombe State Network of Civil Society and Association of Non-Governmental Organisations Gombe State, has lauded the Gombe State House of House Assembly for being an inclusive legislature, while also commending the state governor Muhammadu Yahaya, for ensuring policies and legislation that protect the disability community is put in place.
According to a press statement issued by the Grace Jerry, ADAC Cluster Anchor and Executive Director Inclusive Friends Association obtained on Sunday by our correspondent in Gombe, the group said
July 22, 2024, marked a significant milestone in the journey towards inclusivity in Gombe State.
Our correspondent reports that the statement is a sequel to the public hearing on the proposed bill to establish the Gombe State Disability Protection Law and establishment of the Gombe State Disability Commission and other matters related.
Jerry’s statement partly read, “The five Civil Society Organisations are El-New Hope Foundation, Abia State; Global Youth Empowerment and Vulnerable Initiative, Adamawa State; Lawanti Development Community Foundation, Gombe State; Centre for Peace Education and Community Development, Taraba State and the Inclusive Friends Association, Abuja. The Cluster is implementing the Strengthening Civic Advocacy and Local Engagement through Palladium funded by USAID.
“The ADAC Cluster joins the population of over half a million (594,015) Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Gombe State to applaud the laudable step of the Gombe State House of Assembly under the leadership of Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Muhammad Luggerewo for prioritising a Bill for the Gombe State Disability Protection Law and establishment of the Gombe State Disability Commission and other Matters related on Monday, July 22, 2024, for the Public Hearing of the Gombe State Disability Law.
“The commitment to prioritise the Public Hearing of the Bill to establish the Gombe State Disability Protection Law and establishment of Gombe State Disability Commission and other Matters related at the Gombe State Assembly no doubt resonates with the commitment of House Committee on Education, Hon. Shuaibu Adamu representing Kwami East Consistency during the ADAC Legislative retreat to harnessing legislative support on the Gombe and Taraba State Disability Bill at the City Green Hotel, Jemita Yola, held on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.
“ADAC commends Hon. Shuaibu Adamu representing Kwami East Consistency who privately sponsored the Bill along with Hon. Musa Buba representing Balanga North, Hon. Nasiru Abdulkareem representing Dukku North, and Hon. Adamu Sale Pata representing Yalmatu East as co-sponsors.
While commending other members of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Special Duties that tirelessly worked in ensuring that they completed their task within the period available to them, the cluster said it awaits the passage and assent of the bill to law.
“The ADAC is proud to be part of this process and encouraged that the Gombe State Assembly continue in this professional and people-oriented legislative leadership towards achieving inclusive legislation that will further help harness the potential of the disability community in Gombe State.
“The ADAC eagerly awaits the birth of an inclusive state as the Gombe State Governor, His Excellency Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya rewrites the story of Persons with Disabilities in Gombe State by assenting to the Bill as soon as the Assembly is through with their Legislative process, the ADAC celebrates the efforts of His Excellency towards the disability community even in the absence of a Disability Law and holds strong on his statement We remain resolute in our commitment to providing necessary support for the empowerment and dreams of our PWDs’ and Efforts are underway to establish an Agency to cater for the unique needs and welfare of our PWD community,” Jerry added.
