The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya, on Saturday said states will work with the Federal Government to ensure that citizens overcome hunger.
Yahaya made this disclosure in a statement issued by Director-General Press Affairs Gombe Government House Ismaila Misilli, after his courtesy call to Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Governor said insecurity in some parts of the country has caused the challenge of hunger because most farmers could not cultivate their farms.
Misilli’s statement partly read, “With regards to issue of hunger I attribute it to the vulnerability and the incidence of insecurity that made people not to go to farm, especially in the agriculture producing areas of the States and as a result, issues arose.
“I believe that all the States, in conjunction with the federal government; especially with the support given by Mr. President, are trying to address those issues and recently the prices of food commodities have started dropping and that drop in price coupled with the palliatives extended by the federal and state governments, will help to stabilize the situation and that will keep improving by the grace of God.”
While fielding questions on challenges of flood, the NSGF Chairman said his administration has taken proactive steps towards mitigating losses.
“There isn’t any incident of flood in Gombe for now but we are being proactive because we desilted major channels especially in Gombe Township and even in the local governments with the support of the North-East Development Commission where we also desilted major channels and there is an easy flow of all rain and waters this year.
“So, we are not anticipating but in the event that it comes, we are prepared because we have gotten support and we are ready to address the issue,” the statement said.
