Senator Sumaila Kawu, who represents Kano South, has disclosed that every senator total monthly earnings are N21 million.
PERISCOPE NIGERIA recalls that Kawu’s revelation comes just a day after the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission disclosed that every one of the 109 senators in the upper house earns a combined total of N1.06 million monthly in salaries and allowances.
In an interview with the British Broadcasting Hausa Service on Wednesday morning, Senator Kawu revealed that while his monthly salary is approximately N1 million, his total earnings amount to N21 million.
“The amount of salary received per month is less than one million naira, if there are cuts, it comes back to about six hundred thousand naira and a little something as salary,” said the senator.
He further noted that the administrative fees he receives as a member of the Senate which includes running the office is twenty one million naira per month.
“Because of the increase, in the Senate, each senator is given twenty one million naira every month as the cost of running his office,” he said.
He added that he earns a total of 22 million naira as a senator.“I don’t know of any money that was given to me as a senator,” he said. This shocking revelation raises questions about transparency and accountability in the nation’s financial management, with many calling for clarity on lawmakers’ remuneration packages.
